What is a CT Lumbar Spine?

A CT scan of the Lumbar Spine uses a series of X-rays that together create a three dimensional view for the radiologist to examine. This allows them to visualise the anatomy from multiple perspectives to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

Conditions and circumstances where you may require a CT Lumbar Spine scan at Imaging Associates Radiology can include:

  • Back pain
  • Radiculopathy
  • Trauma or back injuries
  • Pre operative assessment
  • Post operative review

Advantages of Lumbar Spine CT scans over other modalities

With few exceptions, CT scans are suited to all patient types, especially those who find MRI’s difficult to tolerate, or for patients otherwise not suitable for an MRI (for example, patients with pacemakers).

Unlike an X-Ray which only shows a 2D view of your spine, a CT scan provides detailed images of your spine in three different planes across multiple windows and displays both the bone and soft tissue anatomy of your spine. CT scans are particularly effective when examining bony anatomy, for patients with conditions such as osteoarthritis and to assess for fractures with greater accuracy. It is a quick and efficient procedure, tolerated well by most patients including those who have pacemakers or neurostimulators.

The patient experience

What preparation is required for a lumbar spine CT scan?

When you book your CT scan appointment with us, you will be provided with all the information you need to ensure that your scan is smooth and stress-free. CT scans require minimal preparation. There is no need to fast for these scans.

What happens during the examination?

At the time of your appointment, you will be asked to change into a gown and the radiographer will go through a questionnaire with you to gain some valuable information regarding your symptoms before instructing you to lie down on your back on the scanner. The procedure generally takes only a few minutes and then you are free to get changed and go about your daily activities.

What to expect after your CT lumbar spine?

After your CT scan, a report will be provided without delay to your referring doctor who will determine any future treatment or pain management plan, based on the findings of your scan.
