What is Fluoroscopy?

Fluoroscopy (also known as screening) is a real-time x-ray often used to observe a particular function or to guide real-time procedures. At Imaging Associates, we use this type of imaging for different fluoroscopy procedures, including:

Barium Meal

This scan is used to study the function of your digestive tract and can show the oesophagus, stomach and small bowel processing a meal.

The process will require you to drink a cup of barium sulphate contrast (dye), which will enable our radiographer to see how your digestive tract is working. You may experience mild constipation following the procedure, so we recommend you drink plenty of water and eat a high fibre diet.

Barium swallow

This scan is used to study the function of your digestive tract. Using real-time x-ray, this fluoroscopy procedure is used to assess the eosophagus while swallowing.

The process requires you to consume a drink, during which real-time x-rays will be taken. This will produce a short video on a screen, showing your swallowing mechanism, oesophagus and stomach. You may experience
some bloating from the barium as it does induce gas. You are advised to
consume plenty of water following the examination. The barium will leave your
system in the few days following the procedure.

Barium Enema

A Barium Enema is used to study the actions of your large intestine and to identify or diagnose any disorders with its function.

You will be asked to lie on your side on an x-ray table and a lubricated enema tube will be inserted into your rectum. This tube will be used to fill your lower intestine with liquid barium sulphate, which appears white on x-ray. The flow of liquid is monitored on x-ray images taken during the examination. These will highlight any mass, obstruction or disorder with the bowel. At the end of the examination, you will be able to empty your bowels. Another x-ray may be taken after you have emptied your bowels. The barium will leave your body in the few days following the procedure. You are advised to drink plenty of water and consume a diet high in fibre to alleviate any mild constipation often caused by the barium.
